A Taste of Everyday Joy

What seemingly small things bring flashes of joy to your everyday? We’re not talking holidays, presents or dinner out with friends – though those are all good! – but rather the eye-popping beauty of June’s huge blowsy peonies, the scent of an old-fashioned rose, a wild strawberry grown on the windowsill from a supermarket kit, or a Viennese eaten in peace during a moment stolen from the noise and busy-ness.

Why? Because life is the occasion, especially in June. Don’t save things for best. And, even if you’re going nowhere in particular, enjoy it. Taking time to appreciate the moment can make the difference between a great day and a day that’s just… meh. So, we say, even if you’ve no reason for it, buy the cupcakes. Maybe even two boxes. And treat dad on Father’s Day too, with a delicious chocolate gift cake from Dunnes.

Or call that friend who’s on your mind and invite them over. Wear that beautiful dress that’s gathering dust in the wardrobe. And bake that cake for you both to enjoy. In June, the perfect (and perfectly British) bake is Fiona’s Strawberry and Elderflower Cake recipe. No need to go the full ten yards, though, as this cake is incredibly delicious as a simple, undecorated sponge (unless you want to be a bit extra… and why not? Carpe that diem). Either way, there’s no better way to celebrate the midsummer solstice (21 June) with your besties.

Strawberries and other soft fruits, of course, are the crowning glory of Wimbledon. If you’re not lucky enough to bag a ticket, then just kick back on the sofa and watch a match or two with a friend, a cheeky glass of English sparkling wine (or Pimm’s, of course) and strawberries and cream’s bestie: our Mini Pink Boutique Cake, the perfect cake to treat a smaller crowd.
